Extractions

At Campbelltown Family Dental we prioritise the health of our patients…

At Campbelltown Family Dental in Sunnybank our extraction procedure is usually a last resort. We strive to provide patients with treatments that enhance the function of their dentition with a high priority for their health and wellbeing. There are many reasons why it may be necessary to extract teeth and we believe it is important you understand why in some cases it is more beneficial to extract a tooth rather than try to save it.

Wisdom teeth:

Over time, the human mouth has grown smaller and more compact; and in doing so this leaves no room for all of the teeth in your mouth. Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the final teeth to erupt, but unfortunately the mouth is unable to accommodate them most of the time. We have evolved beyond our need to use them and as such, they begin to create a lot of oral health problems. Wisdom teeth are generally removed to avoid toothache and impaction. Tooth impaction occurs when the wisdom tooth grows through on an angle and pushes against the other teeth. This can lead to soft tissue infection around the tooth and possible tooth decay in the adjacent tooth. By extracting the wisdom teeth we try to eliminate future problems.

Over-crowded teeth:

It is common for many people to develop over-crowded teeth as they mature and the reason for this can include:

  • Genetics
  • Occlusion (bite)
  • Impacted teeth
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Thumb sucking
  • Extra teeth
  • Premature baby tooth loss
  • Tooth migration

Under these circumstances it may be preferable to extract teeth. Over-crowded teeth can affect the correct bite pattern of the teeth and make it difficult to keep them clean.

Broken/Fractured teeth:

If a tooth is fractured and unable to be repaired it is a cause for concern. Sharp edges can cut soft tissue, deep enough fractures can reveal sensitive tooth pulp beneath the tooth and can sometimes cause the tooth to become infected. If there is no reliable way to fix the tooth and if it is at risk of becoming infected extraction may be considered the best option for you.

At Campbelltown Family Dental we will remove your teeth using the most effective and minimally invasive procedures possible…
